The outer layer of skin (top, dark pink), known as epidermis, consists of layers of keratinized, flattened cells. Keratinization is the process whereby the protein keratin is laid down in the cells making them tougher. The sweat gland seen here (lower left) is a simple, coiled tubular gland which is important in thermoregulation (maintenance of a constant body temperature).
